Selective Tweets selective about services?

Every blogger is tapping into the traffic that Twitter and Facebook can rpovide, so combining the two with one click only seemed obvious. Selective Tweets did that for us.

Selective Tweets allows you to tweet anything and by adding a simple hashtag (#fb) to the end of it will also become your new Facebook status. To use Selective Tweets you need to configure it to your Twitter account first.

While all this sounds simple and easy, there is always a catch.

At first we thought Selective Tweets was to blame for certain url shortening services being blocked, however, this seems to be a Facebook issue.

We tested several services by doing test tweets using our root domain, http://www.faqpal.com, the following is the result of that test:

Successfully posted to Facebook:

Ow.ly — Ow.ly

Bit.ly — Bit.ly

TinyURL.com — Ow.ly

Zi.ma — Zi.ma

Snipurl.com — Snipurl.com

Adjix.com — Adjix.com

Metamark.com — Metamark.com

MooURL.com — MooURL.com

Unsuccessfully posted to Facebook:

Tweetburner.com — Tweetburner.com

Is.gd — Is.gd

Cli.gs — Cli.gs

We will actually do a test on 90 services over the next week or so and will post our results once completed.

So before you blame an app like we did, do a few tests and see what you find. Facebook needs to address this issue as many Tweeters use some of the services not currently accepted by Facebook.

Do you display trackbacks?

We visit hundreds of blogs each week and are amazed at how many do not display trackbacks. Displaying trackbacks is a sign of link love whether they are dofollow or not, why not show appreciation for people linking to your content. We want to know how you feel.

Combatting Sploggers

One of the biggest annoyances of blogging, is content theft. Especially when the theif doesn't give proper attribution to the original source.

We have all heard of Sploggers, blogs that run a plugin that automatically pulls content from the RSS feed of other blogs and posts the content in full as though it were their own.

Not only is this an irritant, but it hurts SEO wise as now there is duplicate content and typically the original author gets penalized.

Contacting Sploggers typically doesn't result in the issue being reslolved as in most cases you will not find a contact form and if you do, most of them don't care enough to stop or at least add the source of the original post.

We have found a few ways to combat Sploggers:

TYNT

TYNT is a FREE service that monitors all of your content and automatically adds a linkback whenever someone uses it elsewhere. This not only increases traffic to you because of the backlink, but can also help with improving Pagerank.

Summarized RSS Feed

Another way to help combat it, though not the most preferred, is to reduced your RSS feed from full content to summarized content. Be careful with this one as it will also annoy your readers.

Feed Footer WordPress Plugin

Another way is to add a copyright message to the bottom of your RSS feed, though not everyone abides by copyrights, it does give you more leverage is getting the duplicate removed.

Stop Content Theft Buttons and Badges

One of our favourite bloggers, Lorelle, has made some buttons and badges.

Blocking RSS Scraping

You can use .htaccess to stop hotlinking of images and to also block the IP if you have it of the scraper.

Plagiarism Today has put together a fantastic write on how to do both of these.

Copyscape

Copyscape is a free service that monitors your content and alerts you via email if it is being used elsewhere, giving you the opportunity to verify if proper attribution is being given.

Getting your content removed

Lori's Web Design has done a great write-up on finding duplicate content and steps you can take to have it removed the proper way.
